The Rumination
alabamathirteen
8mm tape, digitised
Running time: 9 minutes 50 seconds
“Have you tried meditating? What about a nice walk, get some fresh air?”
The Rumination takes the viewer on a chaotic journey that wryly ruminates on power, platitudes and the burden of being set up to fail. After all, if we could fix it all with some deep breathing or a little jaunt down the park, don’t you think we would?
Image description: A large tree looms overhead. The tree trunk runs diagonally across the screen from the bottom left corner, its branches reaching out like spiny fingers amongst the green leaves.
tectum argenti
Joanna Byrne
16mm film, digitised
Running time: 8 minutes 42 seconds
A moving meditation on the process of therapeutic healing through reconnecting with the self in nature: shot, home-processed and hand- edited on black and white 16mm film. Internal and external landscapes intertwine in an assemblage of fractured but interconnected poetic gestures, multiple exposures, textural images, and abstract marks made onto the surface of the celluloid - evoking the often difficult (but at times euphoric) personal journey of healing from the past.
Image description: A person sits with their back to the camera, arms outstretched to the side. The image is black and white with a pale pink tint. Heavy scratchy processing marks on the film overlay the image.
Imbolc
Joseph June Bond
Digital Microscope film
Running time: 2 minutes 50 seconds
Filmed entirely through a microscope in the artist’s garden during its transition into autumn, Imbolc is an offering to a fertile site of interspecies collaboration, ritual and renewal. The work imagines filmmaking as an act of composting in hopeful preparation for the Gaelic festival Imbolc (meaning ‘in the belly’) that celebrates the emergence of spring.
Image description: A close up of glowing embers that appear to be created from painterly strokes of golden, orange and brown. Captions in white text across the bottom of the screen read ‘a dreading and a gulping we’.
88
Rhian Cooke
Digital film and animation
Running time: 6 minutes 13 seconds
'88' is a film exploring the inner and looping world of anxiety. The film has layers of animation, photography and shot footage, merged together into one movement. Feelings are explored visually through real and imagined imagery. The film brings together patterns from drawings, nature, lights and a butterfly creature made from recycled materials which was inspired by the eighty-eight butterfly (Diaethria anna). The film explores ideas of energy, the mind and their interwinding with nature.
